SECU Foundation Donates $1 Million; earned naming rights

The Johnston Memorial Hospital Foundation capital campaign to build an 18-bed in-patient and residential center has received a $1 million dollar donation from the State Employees’ Credit Union Foundation.

“I am thrilled that the SECU Foundation has chosen the Hospice House and the residents of Johnston County as a community partner,” said Jim Jenkins, chairman of the Johnston Memorial Hospital Foundation.
“The donation speaks volumes of the SECU’s care and concern for citizens of our county and region.” The generous gift entitles the nonprofit financial cooperative to naming rights for the 12-bed inpatient and residential center, which will serve terminally ill patients in Johnston County.

“With this latest contribution, the campaign has collected $2.8 million toward its goal of $3.8 million. And while the donation certainly helps a successful campaign, there’s still much work to be done,” said Hector Perez, executive director of the foundation.
“The last $1 million will be toughest to raise,” he said. The hospice center will be built in Smithfield on the former Bingham Park, which is on Hospital Road behind the main campus of Johnston Medical Center. Since the center is a service of Johnston Home Care and Hospice, it will admit terminally ill patients throughout the county.

Durwood Stephenson, chairman of the capital campaign, said he is hopeful that all $3.8 million can be raised by year’s end and that construction can begin in the spring of 2009.
“The sooner we can build it, the sooner families and loved ones can benefit from this wonderful service,” he said.
