*Downsized Dining: New Skills for Those Who Have Lost a Loved One is a program geared for those learning to cook smaller portions due to the loss of a loved one. The classes will teach participants to cook healthy, well-balanced meals in smaller sizes, while providing support and education about grief. Participants must pre-register at 919-938-7560 to attend. Lunch will be provided. Pre-registration is not required for any other program.

All programs will be held in the First Citizens Conference Center located in the Johnston Medical Mall.


Community Education

Safe Sitter - is a medically accurate instruction series that teaches boys and girls
ages 11-13 years of age how to handle emergencies when caring for young children.

Safe Sitters Learn:
  • Basic Life-Saving Techniques
  • Safety Precautions To Prevent Accidents
  • How And When to Summon Help
  • Tips On Basic Child Care

Safe Sitter classes are available through Johnston Memorial Hospital. A fee of $60 covers the two-day program.

Course Time: 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the the Medical Mall room 1404.

To register your son, daughter or your babysitter, call 919-938-7736.

BCLS Certification Course - $67 per person.

Course teaches infant, child and adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation and choking techniques.

Health Talks -
scheduled quarterly.

Topics include cancer, diabetes osteoporosis, prostate cancer, breast cancer, lupus, heart attacks, cholesterol, etc.

Patient Education

Diabetes Management - Physician Referral Needed. We want to help you live a healthy lifestyle with diabetes.


Our comprehensive diabetes education management classes include the following:
  • Understanding Diabetes
  • Monitoring your blood sugar and ketones
  • Meal planning/nutrition
  • Medication management
  • Exercise
  • Staying on track with diabetes
  • Foot care
  • Insulin administration
  • Sick day guidelines
  • Support groups

Come join us!

Our Diabetes Support Group meets the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Medical Mall, Room 1404 A. It is FREE to the community. We also offer classes for new and not so new diabetic patients.

The fee for outpatient classes is $600 and all Medicare, Medicaid, and insurance will be filed. We are recognized by the American Diabetes Association. For special needs patients and families, we offer individual teaching sessions like Ostomy Education, Gestational Diabetes, Children With Diabetes, Insulin Pump Training, and BCLS/CPR. Physician referral is required for all teachings.

Nutritional Counseling -
To help you meet your nutritional needs, our registered dietitian will help you achieve your optimum goal.
Meal plans, calories, carbohydrate counting, recipes are just a few of the classes offered.

$97 per session, $51 for follow-up sessions. Insurance will be filed. Must have physician order to attend class.


Stoma Care - Registered nurse covers following topics regarding stoma care and ostomics:
  • Care of stoma
  • Healthy versus non healthy stoma progression /infection symptoms
  • Meal planning / nutritional care
  • Activities of daily living
  • Medication
  • Supplies
  • Patient and family emotional health
  • Support opportunities

$97 fee per hour, $51 follow-up - insurance will be filed.

Must have physician's order to attend these classes. Contact scheduling at 919-938-7749 to participate.


Parent/Child Education

Infant CPR - Teaches infant cardiopulmonary resusitation, choking and rescue breathing for your baby. Demonstrations provided.
$67 per couple. Taught by BCLS instructor.

Lamaze Childbirth & Infant Care Classes - Two-day Saturday course assists expectant parents to prepare for their childbirth experience. Classes also cover basic infant care including diapering, feeding and bathing. Tour of OB Dept. included. $80 per couple.

The instructor for Lamaze, Breastfeeding and Sibling classes is Connie Godwin, RN.


Staff Development

The Education Dept. offers monthly an array of educational opportunities for staff and others.
