County’s First Infectious Disease Specialist Joins JMHJohnston Memorial Hospital (JMH) has added Johnston County’s first infectious disease specialist to its medical staff.
Octavio Cieza, MD is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases.
“Dr. Cieza’s arrival is evidence of our focus to expand the availability of medical specialties in Johnston County,” said Kevin Rogols, president and CEO, JMH”.
A native of Peru, Dr Cieza comes to JMH from Barnwell, South Carolina. He received his medical degree in 1990 from the University of San Marco, Peru’s oldest national university. In 1995, he completed his internship at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he stayed to complete an internal medicine residency in 1998.
In 2000, Dr. Cieza finished a two-year infectious disease joint fellowship program at the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois. He received HIV/AIDS clinical training at the University of Texas at Houston in 2001.
Dr. Cieza has been involved in numerous clinical research trials and specializes in HIV/AIDS diagnosis and treatment and treats internal medicine patients as well as other infectious disease patients.
“It is my hope to eventually develop a full-service HIV clinic right here in Johnston County,” he said. “My passion is to help those infected and to treat those with chronic illnesses, patients with Lyme Disease for example, which I think is under diagnosed.”
Dr. Cieza said that Lyme Disease is rampant in areas where people are active outdoors. Headaches, fever, and chronic fatigue are major symptoms of this infection, which can be very problematic if left untreated. The slow progression of Lyme Disease can severely incapacitate those infected.
Dr. Cieza will consult and practice internal medicine out of the Medical Arts Building at 507 North Bright Leaf, Suite 201. The Medical Arts Building is on the campus of Johnston Memorial Hospital
Dr. Cieza is fluent in English and Spanish and can be reached by calling 919-934-8544 or by fax, 919-934-8738.
