Spiritual Care
At Johnston Memorial Hospital, we are committed to caring for you as a whole person. Whatever your religion or beliefs, Chaplains in the Spiritual Care Department want to assist you and your family/friends by providing spiritual and religious care. Our Staff Chaplains are Board Certified and our Chaplain Volunteers are specially trained to take care of people who are hospitalized. Support from the Spiritual Care Department is available 24-hours-a-day and seven days-a-week by speaking to your nurse or calling the hospital Operator.
A Chaplain can help you and your family if you are:
- Feeling fearful, upset, or worried
- In need of counseling
- Asking “Why me?”
- Feeling sad
- Desiring religious or spiritual practices (like prayer) of all faiths and belief systems
- In need of comfort
- Trying to make sense of sickness or suffering
- In need of hope
- In need of non-judgmental listening
- In need of crisis intervention
- In need of consultation on Advance Directives, End-of-Life decisions or ethical issues
- In need of conflict resolution
- Anyone can call a Chaplain and request a visit including patients, families/friends/visitors, and staff of the hospital.
- A Chaplain can help you through:
- Spiritual assessment, intervention and comfort
- Religious support
- Connection to clergy from all faith backgrounds
- Listening
- Prayer and other religious rituals
- Sacred scriptures and religious writings
- Sacred and religious music
- Consultation on important healthcare decisions
- Help in finding a sense of hope or meaning or purpose
- Connection to your own faith community
In addition to visiting in patient rooms, the Spiritual Care Department provides the following services:
- The Interfaith Chapel is located on the first floor of the hospital to the left off of the main lobby. The Interfaith Chapel is open at all times and available for prayer and meditation.
- The Spiritual Care Library, housed in the Diane Goffen Bylciw Room on the third floor of the hospital, contains a variety of encouraging books, CDs and DVDs available for check out for up to two weeks by patients, staff and visitors of the hospital.
- The Spiritual Care Department provides opportunities for gathered worship and prayer within the hospital. Patients, staff and visitors are welcome to attend services. Please call the Spiritual Care Department for more information regarding religious services at Johnston Memorial Hospital.
- Spiritual Care staff members provide support to the community by facilitating Grief Support Groups. For more information about Grief/Loss Support Groups at JMH, please click here (with link to education calendar, etc.).
